Dicot root at the onset of secondary growth

General view

A complete transverse section of buttercup (Ranunculus sp.) root at a level showing the completion of primary growth. Note the lack of pith, accumulation of starch in cortical cells, and the absence of starch in the rhizodermis and exodermis.

The tender root hairs of the rhizodermis (characteristic of this zone of absorption) were torn out during the specimen preparation procedure.
